For those messy microwave users (spaghetti stains can be a nightmare to shift), halve a couple of lemons and set in a glass dish with water. Bring the water to the boil in the microwave, and leave the dish to steam in the microwave for minute before opening - this will loosen hardened particles and make it easier to scrub away stains.

Annoying hard-to-clean grooves in your wooden cutting board? The best way to deliver a deep-cleanse is using salt and lemon. Sprinkle the board with sea-salt and scrub in the salt with a halved lemon. Let it sit for a few minutes, wipe with a sponge to remove all remaining residue and give it a quick rinse. Good as new.

Hate cleaning fiddly window blinds? Use a butter knife and a cloth, spray some cleaner on the cloth and then slide back and forth between each blind.

All pet-owners will know the horror of seeing a brand new sofa transformed into a fur-covered mess. Use a rubber squeegee run the blade forcefully along sofas - the friction of the rubber will pick up the hair at once.

For moderate clogs, drop a couple of Alka-Seltzer tablets down the drain and follow with a cup of vinegar. Wait for 5 minutes for the abrasive agents to work their magic, then run hot water at full power to force out lime scale and debris blockage.

Run out of window cleaner? Vinegar works just as well to shine not only mirrors and windows, but also bathrooms. Use old newspapers as a cloth - they work well as a great disposable cleaning material, as they are less dense than paper towels which makes them still absorbent but less likely to break apart.

Extra tip: Wait to clean windows on an overcast day - this will really show up any shabby smudges and grubby stains and prevent general streaking.

If you're in a rush and need a swiftly presentable bathroom, don't underestimate the power of a baby wipe. Run the wipe over all bathroom surfaces; this gives the added advantage of a pleasant subtle scent.

Cleaning lampshades around the house can be fiddly business. Use a lint roller and a gentle hand, which will instantly pick up lingering dust and fluff.

There's nothing worse than grubby taps to bring down the appearance of a squeaky clean bathroom. Cut a lemon in half and rub juice on the problem areas affected by limescale. Leave for a couple of minutes and then rinse off for shiny results.

Cream of tartar is not just for making meringues, shiny stainless steel can be achieved without all the hassle of foamy toxic sprays.
